Palacio del Infante Don Luis de Borbón

Cuadro de Felipe V

This 1743 painting by Louis Michel Van Loo depicts King Felipe V and his second wife Isabella of Farnese surrounded by their descendants. From left to right are: Maria Ana Victoria de Borbón, Princess of Brazil, who lived in Lisbon at the time. María Bárbara de Braganza and her husband, the Prince of Asturias Fernando VI, son of the King's first marriage and located a little apart from the Queen. Felipe V with his cane, coat, and decorations. Luís Antonio, in red, referring to his ecclesiastical career. Isabel of Farnese, magnificent and proud. She rests her hand on the crown, indicating that it was she who ruled the Court and the Government. Felipe, Duke of Parma with his wife Luisa Isabel de Borbón, daughter of Luis XV. Maria Theresa, Dauphin of France. Maria Antonia Fernanda, who became Queen of Sardinia when she married the Duke of Savoy. Maria Amalia of Saxony with her husband Carlos III, King of Naples. In the front, two girls appear gracefully: Isabel and María Isabel, daughters of Felipe and Carlos respectively. The characters appear in very different attitudes: Felipe V shows exhaustion and deterioration, while his wife appears domineering and authoritarian; Fernando VI elegant and awkward, Carlos III self-confident, María Amalia sweet. It is a political and pompous composition, with the official theatricality of the historical moment in which it is performed. It shows a scene where the family is listening to a concert, hence the appearance of musicians playing on a balcony. The scene shows a columned room with curtains and an abundance of clothes overlooking a garden. This room never existed.
